Whithin the framework of the congress Stadt der Frauen (City of Women), organized by the Bayerische Staatsoper as part of the Opera Festival in Munich, Johannes Müller and Philine Rinnert presented a drag performance, using the last Aria of Richard Strauss’ opera Salomé. They invited ten drag performers, everyone had to lip-sync the aria in the same setting. There were no rehearsals. By the very different appropriations and interpretations of Salomé’s voice and character the propositions of authenticity and gender are challenged.
